The employees of SABC went on strike over wage disputes on Thursday and decided to keep it going until the broadcaster meet with their demands. As Per BEMAWU President Hannes du Buisson, “Unless the SABC between now and Thursday engages the unions, unfortunately, this is what will happen on Thursday. We do not believe that SABC is in a bad financial position that they claim to be in, we know that cash flow has improved dramatically. Just for the record, we’re not stuck on 10%, that is a position that employees would proceed to go on strike for”.
It’s worth mentioning here that the union has denied a 4.5% salary increase that the broadcaster is agreeing to. Moreover, they have cited financial situation of the firm as a reason for not being able to meet the demands of the union. As per SABC Spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said, “The reality of the matter is that as we speak, SABC is in a financial situation and salary increases are based on the fact, we do not have money and that is a fact it’s not a claim and that is why we came up with the offer that we are making. We have opened up our books for the unions; they know we are not claiming that we do not have money.”
When asked about the questions by unions regarding the money that has been given to board members irrespective of the fact that the organization is going through a financial crunch, Kganyago said, “The money that the board has received is the money that was due to them, “The board members had deferred their salaries in favor of the employees, but when their term of office ended they had no option, we had to pay them what is due to them”.
